Learning Styles
What
is a Learning Style?
A Learning
Style is the way we learn. Different people learn in different
ways, using their sense of sight, hearing, or touch to master
new information.
Visual
Learners may think in pictures and learn best from visual
displays including: diagrams, illustrated text books, overhead
transparencies, videos, flipcharts and hand-outs. Auditory
Learners may learn best through verbal lectures, discussions,
talking things through and listening to what others have to
say.
The four
types of learning tested by the M.A.P. Test are:
- Right
Brain/Left Brain Dominance
- Kinesthetic/Conceptual
Probability
- Auditory/Visual
Learning Styles
- Attention
Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Why
is it Important to Know Our Learning Styles?
According
to Jeffrey Freed and Laurie Parsons, authors of Right-Brained
Children in a Left-Brained World, the right-brained learner,
"processes information in a random, non-linear style
and is quite visual in the way he learns." Further, "What
kids [that are right-brained learners] need isn't a prescription
for pills but a prescription for a different teaching method."
If Freed thinks matching your teaching method is so important
to the kind of learners you are teaching, shouldn't you know
what kind of learners you are teaching every day??
Suppose
you were a football coach with a team full of Visual Learners.
You stand on the sidelines shouting out plays and instructions
during a game but nobody seems to understand. The players
get frustrated and you get frustrated. If you had known they
were Visual Learners, you could have called them over and
shown them a sketch of the play and they would have gotten
it.
The same
principle applies to all students (and adults). The more you
know about their learning style, the better you can communicate
with them. The M.A.P. Test is an extensive test that checks
many factors and gives a clear written explanation of test
results and what those results mean in layman's terms so that
you can understand and apply them.
